The Old Testament*

The Old Testament is a collection of books. These books tell the story of the beginning of all things. They also tell the stories of Moses, of Israel, and of Israel’s kings and prophets. But most of all, they tell us about God.

The five parts of the Old Testament*

THE BOOKS OF MOSES

These books tell the story of the beginning.  They tell about the beginning of the heavens and the earth.  And they tell about the beginning of the nation of Israel*.

THE BOOKS OF HISTORY

These books tell the stories of Israel’s kings and prophets. They tell about Israel from the time they crossed into the promised land until the time they returned to the land after the exile.

THE BOOKS OF POETRY

These books are filled with the words of Israel’s wisest men. They include books of poetry and the songs of the people of God.

THE BOOKS OF THE MAJOR PROPHETS

These books include the writings of Israel’s prophets. The Major Prophets are the longest of these books – the words of Ezekiel, Daniel, Isaiah, and Jeremiah.

THE BOOKS OF THE MINOR PROPHETS

These books include the writings of Israel’s prophets. The Minor Prophets are 12 of the shortest of these books.
