Q&A67-68

Question 67 & 68

When Adam sinned, our world became a broken place. We became a broken people. We began to do bad things. People began to hurt one another. They began to create their own gods. They did not care for the world as God told them to. The Bible calls these bad things, sin.

Because God is holy and good, he does not ignore sin. He must punish sinners when they do evil. God can not ignore the wrong things people do. He is a God of justice. [1]

That is a big problem for us. It is a big problem because we sin. When we break God’s law, we must pay the price for our failure. We are not right with God. We do not obey God in every way. And because of our sin, we deserve to be punished. We deserve to die. When we broke God’s law, we deserved God’s angry judgment. [2]We deserve to be put away from God forever.

So, how can we be right with God again? How can we escape God’s judgment for our sins? By ourselves, we can not.[3] God must do something for us that we can not do for ourselves. And God did do something. He made a way to solve our problem. God the Father decided to rescue us. So, he sent his Son into the world to do that. He sent Jesus to be the one who saves sinners. [4]

How did Jesus do this?

Jesus lived a life that pleased God in every way. He did something that no one else has ever done. Jesus never sinned. He always told the truth. He always did all that God wanted people to do. Jesus did all that God’s law demanded. He lived his life in a way that always pleased God.

Because Jesus was without sin, he did not deserve to die. We were the guilty ones. He was not guilty. But God loved us. And this is how he showed his love. While we were still sinners, God sent Jesus to rescue us.[5]  He loved us so much that, even when we were still sinners, Jesus died for us.

Jesus became a man to sacrifice himself so that we could live. He would give up his life so that we would not have to die. Jesus would take the guilt and sin of others upon himself.[6] He would pay the price that our sin deserved.

Jesus went to the cross. On the cross, God let his anger for sin fall upon Jesus. And there, on the cross, Jesus died. God poured out all of his wrath against sin on Jesus. Jesus took the punishment for sinners. He died in our place.

But Jesus did not stay in the grave. God was pleased with the sacrifice that Jesus made. So, God brought him to life again. Now, because of Jesus, God can forgive us for all of the bad things we have done.

There is a way for sinners to be right with God. We do not need to die and be put away from God forever. Jesus went to the cross for us. Jesus has died in our place. Jesus has done all that needed to be done to rescue us from God’s anger. And Jesus is the only one who can make us right with God. The scriptures say it this way. ‘There is one God. There is one man who can bring people back to God. That man is Jesus Christ.[7]

Now, all people who trust in Jesus do not need to worry about their failure to obey God. All that he demands of us is that we trust him. We believe on his son, Jesus. We bow to Jesus as our Lord and King. We give up our own way to follow him.

This is how the scriptures tell this story. ‘Christ also suffered once for sins. The one who did what is right suffered for those who do not do right. He suffered to bring you to God. His body was put to death. But the Holy Spirit brought him to life again.[8]
